Metal Fabrication & Machinery

The Metal Fabrication and Machinery industry consists of fabricated metal products, agricultural and industrial machinery (oil and gas equipment), transportation equipment and manufactured homes. This is an emerging industry that contributes to the wealth of the area and complements the agri-business and oil and gas services activity.

Specifically in the oil sands, the Metal Fabrication and Machinery industry supplies fabricated structural products, modules, boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, and steel pipes and tubes; and performs field installation and maintenance of equipment.

The Palliser region, part of the Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor (EATC), is a prime location for metal manufacturing with its comparatively low land values. Alberta will require more than $200 billion of new construction and maintenance spending over the next twenty-five years, of which a large portion will go towards fabricated metal and equipment. Investors realize that the EATC access to booming markets means a new world of opportunity for this sector.

Local Company – Big Impact

An Edmonton-based company called CCI Thermal uses thermal technology to make a very popular industrial strength heater called the Ruffneck. But did you know that Skill Metal, a Bassano-based company,  makes the structural case they come in?

It’s a simple enough concept. Assemble the casings and ship them to Edmonton to receive their thermal heating technology but it’s a great example of another smaller, rural company thinking outside the box.
