About

Welcome to the Sportsman’s Paradise! Youngstown is a small community with heart and soul offering something for all ages.

Youngstown is a great place to raise a family. The children won’t have to go far to school as Youngstown School caters children from grade 1 – 12 with a privately run Kindergarten.

For the outdoorsy types we are close to some great fishing holes. Hunting is quite popular. You can hunt geese, ducks, white tail deer, mule deer, and antelope. Moose hunting is just minutes away. Camping sites are close by if you like to fish or just relax on the beach.

During the winter months the curling rink is kept busy with weekly square draw and four curling bonspiels. Summer is baseball time and there is an annual tournament. The following weekend is the annual curling summer bonspiel.

Youngstown, a small community, with a big heart and is a large family “where everyone knows your name”!

Housing

Although the region’s hot economy continues to remain strong, the housing market offers many attractive options whether you are looking at building a home, buying a home, or checking out rental accommodations.

Climate

Sunshine coupled with warm dry summers means more time to spend outdoors and exploring our region.  The low altitude of the region produces a very warm climate, with particular areas often matching or surpassing the “hot spot” of Canada.  Winters have become very mild over the last few years with average temperatures on the rise.

The climate in nearby Hanna is considered semi-arid, which means lots of sunshine.  The average rainfall for the year is 32.5 mm while the number of frost free days is 109.  The average temperature in July is 17.1 degrees Celsius and the average temperature in January is -16.6 degrees Celsius.

Taxes

Residential property taxes are definitely a factor to consider when relocating. Although taxes vary depending on the community, Albertans paid the lowest provincial and municipal taxes, overall, in Canada.

For 2009,  the rate is $19.90 per $1,000 of assessed value for residential taxpayers and $21.54 per $1,000 of assessed value for commercial ratepayers.

For more information contact Emma at the Village Office (Tel: 403- 779-3873) during regular business hours.

Additional Information

Property tax is either provided as a percentage or as a millage rate.  A mill is one-thousandth of a dollar.  To calculate the property tax, the assessed value of property is multiplied by the mill rate and then divided by 1,000.  For example, property assessed at $100,000 located in a municipality with a mill rate of 20 mills would have a property tax bill of $2,000 per year.

Utilities

Utilities including natural gas, power, and water are necessary expenses to consider for both homeowners and renters. Communities in south east Alberta boast some of the lowest rates in the country.

Electrical Power
Natural Gas
Telephone
Cable Television
Garbage, Water, Sewer

Garbage is billed under taxation. Pick up is Tuesdays. Water and Sewer are billed bi-monthly.

For more information contact Emma at the Village Office (tel: 403-779-3873 during regular business hours.

Health

Under the Canada Health Act, Alberta has a publicly administered and funded health care system that guarantees Albertans receive universal access to medically necessary hospital and health care services.
